A Galoot is a large, clumsy person, often ill-mannered, who is socially awkward and abrasive.

The origin of Galoot is thought to be the Spanish “Galeoto” which meant galley slave, used mainly in Sierra Leone and other African colonies.

British sailors adopted the word to mean unskilled or of uncertain provenance.

Galoot is now primarily used in the USA to mean clumsy  oaf.

    Example usage:

“”Stop being such a big galoot and help me with my shopping bags!”.
