La Di Da
“La Di Da” is Cockney rhyming slang for cigar as the “Di” and the final “Da” rhyme with “Cigar”.
La Di Da is also an expression for something fancy or pretentious. This use of the phrase is believed to originate from the Opera, supposedly the preserve of the rich and famous, the songs of which are often mimicked with “La Di Da” by people who don’t know the words. The phrase was in common usage around the turn of the last century before falling out of use before the second World War. It has recently made a come back.
“You went to the museum? That’s a bit La Di Da!”.
